I was listening to a podcast earlier today. It was about Fernando Mendoza, the 2025 Heisman Trophy winner. He has been very emotional about winning the trophy. He was not expected to have an undefeated season, let alone to win this prestigious award.  Fernando cares so much that he has cried while being interviewed and speaking about his achievement. The person speaking about him said that caring is cool and that we need more of this and not less.

Have you ever cared so much that you’ve gotten choked up, you found yourself unable to get the words out even though all you wanted to do was speak how you feel?

I was hosting the Piedmont Farm Animal Refuge Gala back in 2017 (I believe) and they showed a video highlighting the sanctuary and all the animals. When it was finished, I had to speak to everyone to carry on the program. I cried. The film was so moving that I cried in front of the room full of supporters. I care so much for The Refuge and that came through with emotion I could not control.

We need more of this. We need to let ourselves feel and let ourselves care, even knowing that there could be hurt and/or pain on the other side of allowing ourselves to feel so deeply.

Isn’t this why the team of activists are out there protesting to help shutdown a puppy mill store in Raleigh? Isn’t this why Zoey helped to rescue four chickens from Purdue and was found guilty in a court of law for her actions? This amount of caring should be a lesson to all of us. I’m not saying to break the law or even to stand on a sidewalk outside of a store to show how much you care (but please do if that is what you feel is needed). I’m saying that the compassion you feel for others, for the planet, and for all the sentient beings we share this planet with deserve for us to be as caring as possible.

So tell your friends you love and miss them. Call your family. Give and receive hugs, even with strangers. Be the positive that we all need in this world because this stuff is contagious! The more of you that do it the more influence you actually have on others doing the same.
